Oblivion Review

Some classes have more than one. An example of this is the Argonians, who can breath under water and are resistant to disease. Wood Elves have the power of beast tongue, allowing them to command creatures up to level 5, as well as being being talented marksmen.

After choosing the particular race that you wish to play as, you will most likely spend upwards of an hour tweaking your character’s facial details by moving the many, many sliding bars around, changing features such as nose, face, eyes, chin, mouth and head along with a host of others, all with their own sub-headings and bars which you can use to make your character look exactly the way you want. The option to change your character’s hairstyle and colour is also available, as well as the ability to choose how old your character looks. Unlike games such as Fable, your character does not age as the game progresses. The option of adjusting facial hair is missing, but most of the time your head will be covered by a helmet, so you won’t really miss those details.

You start out by following the Emperor through a labyrinth of cave systems and dungeons, and along the way you get to complete your character by choosing your birth sign and character class. Both of these add bonuses to your character’s statistics, depending on what you choose. To get the character just the way you want, you are given the option of creating your own custom class along with a name of your choice. If you want your character to focus on Magic, then choose Magic-related skills as your major skills, such as Conjuration, Alchemy, Destruction or Restoration. Want a warrior style character? Then make him (or her) specialise in Heavy Armour, Blade, Light Armour, Blunt weapons, etc. After completing all of these final options, you come to the sewer exit, where you are given a final chance to change anything you want about your character before you reach the outside world of Cyrodill.

By talking to Emperor Uriel Septim, you are able to gather that he doesn’t have long to live. Sure enough, after the first 30 minutes or so he carks it, with the parting words, “Close shut the jaws of Oblivion”. He then hands you the sacred jewel known as The Amulet Of Kings. For those of you who don’t know, Oblivion is the equivalent of hell for the people of Tamriel. With these words and the Amulet Of Kings hidden away in your pocket, your incredible journey in to the vast land of Cyrodill begins.
